Many if not most vocalists can whistle; and it has now become common practice for modern composers to expect vocal soloists to occasionally alternate with whistling. Concurrently, another recent phenomenon is the spread of artwhistling: a lesser-known, "instrumental" approach to whistling known for its use of diverse range of techniques, such as multiphonics and prestissimo articulations.
This talk will involve the audience through surveys and other demonstrations. From a purely practical, performance-oriented point of view, we will look at both the real and specious similarities between singing and whistling, including diaphragm and breath control, stage movement, repertoire, and artwhistling techniques. From this, we will conclude what the medium of human whistling can (and cannnot) offer to professional vocalists in terms of musical performance, especially how the artwhistling approach to whistling can expand upon these advantages. |
